Day 416: Dead Desires

Regret? Is this not what haunts us all?? And loss? Today, the Greek poet Cavafy offers some tragic insight into dead desires - desires that were never attained. What becomes of them? And the persons attached to them? Haunting images, to say the least.

Desires - C.P. Cavafy

Like beautiful bodies of the dead, who had not grown old
and they shut them with tears, in a magnificent mausoleum,
with roses at the head and jasmine at the feet -
that is how desires look that have passed
without fulfillment; without one of them having achieved
a night of sensual delight, or a moonlit morn.
