Day 71: The Importance of Objects

'These are a few of my favourite things...'

Frank O'Hara may have been paying homage to the Sound of Music's song here in his poem which celebrates all the little accessories that life has to offer and which go in to making poems. 'Oh! kangaroos, sequins, chocolate sodas!...Pearls, harmonicas, jujubes, aspirins!...These things are with us every day.' They have value as their concrete forms can hold such vague entities as memories, emotions and ideas.

Let's notice the things we are privy to, the things that poetry makes so spectacular, that are here within our reach, today and every day.

Today - Frank O'Hara

Oh! kangaroos, sequins, chocolate sodas!
You really are beautiful! Pearls,
harmonicas, jujubes, aspirins! all
the stuff they've always talked about

still makes a poem a surprise!
These things are with us every day
even on beachheads and biers. They
do have meaning. They're strong as rocks.
