Day 92: Safe House

I've always  been of the opinion that a 9 to 5 routine sucks all the joy out of life. The starched stillness of suburban living. So many people not living their lives.

Seems The Buk thought the same too.

safe - Charles Bukowski

the house next door makes me
sad.
both man and wife rise early and
go to work.
they arrive home in early evening.
they have a young boy and a girl.
by 9 p.m. all the lights in the house
are out.

the next morning both man and
wife rise early again and go to
work.
they return in early evening.
By 9 p.m. all the lights are
out.

the house next door makes me
sad.
the people are nice people, I
like them.

but I feel them drowning.
and I can't save them.

they are surviving.
they are not
homeless.

but the price is
terrible.

sometimes during the day
I will look at the house
and the house will look at
me
and the house will
weep, yes, it does, I
feel it.

  1. Hmmmm, some people are perfectly happy in their suburbia. Just because we wouldn't be doesn't mean they aren't...seems like a bit of projection here. I do like it but I think it's difficult for creative types to relate to noncreative types who are actually quite happy with that routine. It is their safety--our freedom is our safety and it would surely scare his neighbors to death to have such freedom!

  2. Well-said Mary! Yes, you're exactly right. Suburban life, especially in Dublin anyway, is very much focused on the work routine, and especially getting up early, getting to bed early. I couldn't take that lifestyle at all! It seems very...confining and regimented. There's something about the wee late hours of the night that are associated with freedom, and creativity especially.
